Greenbrier East Lady Spartans Continue Up And Down Week During Championship Play

Third-ranked Greenbrier East Lady Spartans have only lost three games this season. Unfortunately, their last two contests make up two of those losses.

East (15-3) started off on the right foot last weekend in the Big Atlantic Classic in Beckley when they defeated the Hedgesville Lady Eagles in dominating fashion. 76-30, but two nights later, in the championship game game, East suffered a tough 54-46 loss to the Morgantown Mohigans (12-4) who were ranked sixth.

Spartans Pick Up Second Win Of The Season

The Greenbrier East Spartans (2-10) lost to Bluefield on Tuesday, January 23, on the road, but their resilient performance in that game ,catapulted by Bailey Coles' career high 19 points, led to an even better performance on Wednesday night against the Covington Cougars.

The Cougars, who came in with a record of 12-3, left Greenbrier East 12-4 after the Spartans picked up a much needed 56-51 victory.

Lady Spartans Hang On For Win Over Bluefield

After suffering their first loss of the season this past Saturday night to George Washington, the Greenbrier East Lady Spartan (11-1) needed a bounce back performance at home against a scrappy Bluefield Beavers (10-6) team on Monday, January 22.

That is exactly what the Spartans did as they held on to survive a furious comeback attempt by the Beavers and won 53-50.

GEHS Struggles To Rediscover Confidence

The Greenbrier East Spartans just recently traveled to Beckley to face the Woodrew Wilson Flying Eagles on Saturday, January 20, at the Raleigh County Convention Center. East lost 63-41.

In December, East played Beckley tough, before eventually falling late 78-64.

Fourth Quarter Comeback Falls Short, GE Spartans Lose To Nicholas County

In one of the stranger games in recent memory, the Greenbrier East Spartans (1-8) hosted the Nicholas County Grizzlies (6-6) in a battle of former Class AAA rivals on Thursday, January 18.

With the Spartans missing senior point guard Cory Beswick due to a concussion he suffered Saturday night against Graham, VA, the Spartans struggled in their half court offense which led to ice cold shooting and several critical turnovers. When the final horn sounded, East had come up on the wrong end of the scoreboard, 56-46.

Spartans Downed By Number Two University

The Greenbrier East Spartan boy's basketball team picked up their first win of the seaon in their opening game of the Jerry Bradley Memorial Christmas Tournament on Friday, December 29, when Nathan Lemons drilled a 3-pointer with three seconds left, but unfortunately that momentum did not carry over into Saturday night when they lost to the Class AAA's second ranked team, the University Hawks, by a score of 72-41.

To defeat the Hawks, who came into the game 6-0 after a 102-27 win over Wayne, the Spartans needed to deal with their relentless, WVU-style full court pressure. University (7-0) had scored over 10 points in a game three times already this season.

Lady Spartans Win Jerry Bradley Championship

The Greenbrier East Lady Spartans are quietly having yet another stellar basketball season so far in 2017-18.

The Spartans head into the new calnedar year undefeated at 8-0 and are improving each and every game.

Jerry Bradley Memorial Tournament Set

Area basketball fans wanting a break from the holiday rush and pre-New Year celebrations can make their way to the Greenbrier East Spartan gymnasium this weekend for the annual Jerry Bradley Memorial Christmas Tournament.

The tourney is played to honor the late Jerry Bradley, a former East Spartan coach and athletic director.
