John Paul Gadd, 86, of Alderson, WV, passed away Monday, July 9, 2018, at his home.
Born May 1, 1932, in Duo, WV, he was a son of Milton Claude and Lillie Mae Hart.
John served his country in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Munich, Germany. John began his career at the J&J Store in Rainelle, WV, at the age of 16 and continued in the grocery field after his military service. He trained at the Toledo Meat Cutting School and was employed by Safeway in the Washington area for many years. In 1968, John and his brothers, Bill and Clarence, returned to West Virginia and opened Gadd's IGA in Fairlea, WV. The rest is history.
John loved people and enjoyed dancing, playing poker, and shooting pool.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Gay Sheaves Gadd of Rainelle; two brothers, Ed, and Clarence Gadd; and son-in-law, Marshall Honaker.
Survivors include his life partner, Pam Rathbun; two daughters, Teresa Ambler and husband, Jeff, and Wendy Honaker, both of Alderson; sister, Mary Alice Martinez of Lewisburg, WV; brother, Bill Gadd of Bluefield, WV; three grandchildren, Justin Allen and John Allen Ambler, and Megan Skye Meadows and husband, Justin, all of Alderson; three great-grandchildren, Justice, Lukas, and Dravin Ambler; and many nieces and nephews.
At his request, there will be no funeral services, but a memorial to celebrate his life is planned and will be announced at a later date for his many friends and family.
