Possible Deal Reopens Schools Thursday

By Robert Bordelon

A potential deal has been reached between union leaders and Governor Jim Justice's team to end the ongoing teacher walkout on Tuesday, February 27. Schools are expected to reopen Thursday, February 29, but union leaders reserved the right to pull their members back out of schools if the deal is bogged down or fails to pass the state Legislature.

Holding a late afternoon press conference, Justice announced a 3 percent pay raise for all state employees and a 5 percent pay raise for all state employees working within the educational system. In addition, a task force will be assembled immediately to resolve issues with Public Employees Insurance Agency (PEIA) in conjunction with the current freeze on rate changes in state employee health insurance plans, which lasts through July 1, 2019.
