A piece of legislation meant to continue funding the federal government did not pass Friday, January 19, by midnight, leading to a shutdown of non-essential federal government services.
President Donald Trump rejected a bipartisan negotiation over the Deferred Action On Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, a negotiation that previously congressional Democrats and Republicans wanted tied to the legislation that would continue to fund the government. The DACA program was created under President Barack Obama to allow children illegally brought into the United States by their parents the ability to apply for temporary protective visas.
