In October 2018, the Greenbrier County Commission crafted a plan to bring more flights to the Greenbrier Valley Airport and increase tourism throughout the county and the region. This plan lead to a meeting between the commission and Governor Jim Justice, the owner of The Greenbrier, in which he allegedly stated he would close the hotel during part of the year if the plan moved forward.
The desire throughout the county for more flights from different locations out of the Greenbrier Valley Airport initiated discussions within the Greenbrier County Commission, then consisting of President Woody Hanna, Lowell Rose, and Mike McClung.
